In my anime head canon, this is the reason why Tuxedo Mask is, well, Tuxedo Mask. The last few moments of peace with Serenity, dampened by the looming war. So when he suddenly, unknowingly transforms in the first season it’s tapping into that protective memory.
…although I do think it’s hilarious that Serenity recognizes him right away but Usagi doesn’t. Must be the hat.
